Turgut Reis

Turgut Reis, one of the most important sailors of the Ottoman Empire, achieved great successes in the Mediterranean in the 16th century and inscribed his name in gold letters in Ottoman maritime history. Known in Europe as "Dragut," this great sailor made significant contributions to strengthening Ottoman dominance in the Mediterranean by leading both the Ottoman Navy and Ottoman pirates.

The Birth and Youth of Turgut Reis

Turgut Reis, who is believed to have been born in 1485 in the village of Karabağ near Bodrum, developed an interest in sailing at a young age. He gained significant experience in maritime affairs by joining the sailors at a young age. By working with Ottoman pirates operating in the Mediterranean, he quickly rose to the rank of captain.

From Piracy to Ottoman Admiralty

Thanks to his superior skills at sea, Turgut Reis became one of the most effective sailors of the Ottoman Empire. He achieved great successes in the campaigns he organized against the Crusader fleets in the Mediterranean. Growing up alongside Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha, Turgut Reis became one of the strongest commanders of the Ottoman navy after his death. In the conquests assigned to him by the Ottoman State, he achieved significant successes, especially along the coasts of North Africa.

Turgut Reis' Victories in the Mediterranean

In the 1540s, Turgut Reis accelerated his activities in the Mediterranean on behalf of the Ottoman State. In 1551, he organized the Tripoli Expedition, bringing the region under Ottoman control. With this victory, he was granted the title of Beylerbeyi of Tripoli and took over the administration of the region. Thanks to Turgut Reis, the Ottoman State reinforced its power in the Mediterranean and gained a significant advantage over the Spanish and other European powers in the Western Mediterranean.

In 1559, Turgut Reis fought along the coasts of Algeria and Tunisia with the Ottoman navy, and in 1565, he participated in the Ottoman Siege of Malta. However, he was injured during the siege and passed away on June 23, 1565.

Turgut Reis has become an unforgettable figure in history with his courage, maritime knowledge, and contributions to the Ottoman State. Today, the town of Turgutreis in Bodrum bears his name, and his contributions to maritime history are commemorated with respect.
